Vacuum Birefringence in a Rotating Magnetic Field

چکیده

We calculate the vacuum polarization-induced ellipticity acquired by a linearly polarized laser beam of angular frequency ω̄ on traversing a region containing a transverse magnetic field rotating with a small angular velocity Ω around the beam axis. The transmitted beam contains the fundamental frequency ω̄ and weak sidebands of frequency ω̄±2Ω, but no other sidebands. To first order in small quantities, the ellipticity acquired by the transmitted beam is independent of Ω, and is the same as would be calculated in the approximation of regarding the magnetic field as fixed at its instantaneous angular orientation, using the standard vacuum birefringence formulas for a static magnetic field. Also to first order, there is no rotation of the polarization plane of the transmitted beam. Analogous statements hold when the magnetic field strength is slowly varying in time.

Vacuum Birefringence as a Vacuum Emission Process

We argue that the phenomenon of vacuum birefringence in strong inhomogeneous electromagnetic fields can be most efficiently analyzed in terms of a vacuum emission process. In this contribution, we exemplarily stick to the case of vacuum birefringence in a stationary perpendicularly directed, purely magnetic background field extending over a finite spatial extent. Similar field configurations ar...

Birefringence and Dichroism of the QED Vacuum

In the presence of a strong external field, the vacuum reacts, becoming magnetized and polarized. The index of refraction, magnetic permeability, and dielectric constant of the vacuum are straightforward to calculate using quantum electrodynamic one-loop corrections [1–6]. In this paper, we calculate the magnetic permeability and dielectric tensors of an external electric or magnetic field of a...

Magneto-Thermo-Elastic Stresses and Perturbation of Magnetic Field Vector in a Thin Functionally Graded Rotating Disk

In this paper, a semi-analytical solution for magneto-thermo-elastic problem in an axisymmetric functionally graded (FG) hollow rotating disk with constant thickness placed in uniform magnetic and thermal fields with heat convection from disk’s surfaces is presented. Solution for stresses and perturbation of magnetic field vector in a thin FG rotating disk is determined using infinitesimal theo...

Effect of Magnetic Field on the Rotating Flow in a Similar Czochralski Configuration

We present a numerical study of the rotating flow generated by two rotating disks in co-/counter-rotating, inside a fixed cylindrical enclosure similar to the Czochralski configuration (Cz).  The enclosure having an aspect ratio A = H/Rc equal to 2, filled with a low Prandtl number fluid (Pr = 0.011), which is submitted to a vertical temperature gradient. The finite volume method has been used ...

Thermal Convection in a (Kuvshiniski-type) Viscoelastic Rotating Fluid in the Presence of Magnetic Field through Porous Medium (TECHNICAL NOTE)

The effect of magnetic field on an incompressible (Kuvshiniski-Type) viscoelastic rotating fluid heated from below in porous medium is considered. For the case of stationary convection, magnetic field and medium permeability have both stabilizing and destabilizing effect on the thermal convection under some conditions whereas rotation has a stabilizing effect on the thermal convection. In the...
